Planning for our energy future

Indiana Michigan Power is committed to safely meeting public demand for clean energy and investing in the communities we serve and partner with. Nuclear power is the current cornerstone of I&M’s diverse, reliable generation mix and produces a large amount of emission-free energy. SMRs are the next step in nuclear energy generation, and I&M has partnerships in place to incorporate lessons learned from the earliest adopters of this technology while we explore the development of our own project in Spencer County, Indiana at the Rockport Plant site. This includes I&M seeking grants from the U.S. Department of Energy to support the Early Site Permit (ESP) Application process with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. If awarded funds, I&M will conduct ESP activities, as well as select the GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) BWRX-300 technology for the development of a Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) at the site, which is a major component of a potential future Construction Permit.

SMRs will play an important role in helping I&M provide a reliable power supply and meet its clean energy goals. To balance renewable energy sources, SMRs can provide clean energy to I&M customers 24/7, 365 days a year, rain or shine.
